The Poco M5 is a mid-range smartphone released by POCO in September 2022. It features a 6.58 inch LCD IPS display with 1080×2408 resolution (FHD+), 500 cd/m² brightness, and 1500:1 contrast ratio, offering users an excellent viewing experience. The phone also has a metal body and 83.2% usable surface.

The Poco M5, just like the Poco M4 5G announced in August, is one of Xiaomi’s most affordable handsets in the portfolio. Both handsets are quite similar, but the M5 lacks 5G connectivity and it’s available in more markets worldwide. There’s also an Indian variant of the M5, which is mostly identical to its global counterpart, so it’s safe to use this review as a reference if you are located in India and you are deciding on whether you should buy the Poco M5.  Even though the Poco M4 5G offers a Dimensity chipset while the more recent M5 relies on a supposedly less powerful Helio G99 (going by MediaTek’s naming scheme), there shouldn’t be any substantial difference in performance. The Dimensity 700 on the M4 5G has a 5G modem and it’s based on a 7nm manufacturing process, while the Helio G99 employs the same octa-core CPU, the same Mali-G57 MC2 GPU but omits the 5G part. So in a way, these two are 4G and 5G variants of the same handset.

Under the hood, the Poco M5 is powered by the MediaTek Helio G99 (MT6789) (6nm) processor and has options for 4GB or 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 64GB or 128GB of UFS Storage 2.2. It has an AnTuTu (v9) score of 355000 and is equipped with a side fingerprint sensor for added security.

Camera wise, the Poco M5 features a triple camera setup with a main Samsung S5KJN1 sensor of 50.0Mpx with f/1.8 aperture and ISOCELL technology, a depth portrait mode lens of 2.0Mpx with f/2.4 aperture, and a macro lens of 2.0Mpx with f/2.4 aperture. It also has a front-facing 5.0Mpx selfie camera with f/2.2 aperture and CMOS technology. The Poco M5 is capable of shooting 4K videos as well.

For connectivity, the Poco M5 supports Bluetooth 5.3, dual SIM, NFC, audio jack, and infrared. It also has a 5000mAh battery with 18.0W fast charging support, but it lacks wireless charging capabilities.
